Dichroic Glass

Developed by NASA for use in satellite mirrors Dicroic Glass is made up of multiple ultra-thin layers of different metal oxides (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, magnesium, silicon) that are evaporated onto the surface of glass in a vacuum chamber. It can then be fused with other glass in multiple firings and shaped to use in many ways.

At the Sunset Clebration in Key West Mallory SquareJimmy Brogdon takes the resulting plates of dichroic glass and blends them together through a technic of fusing to create a myriad of combinations. He then cuts, grinds, and shapes them into beautiful pieces that he makes into jewelry. All pieces are then fired through an annealing process that strengthens them and reduces their brittleness so they can be worn safely as jewelry.

The depth and play of color in dichroic glass as the pieces move in the light is remarkable, and due to variations in the firing process, individual results can never be reproduced. The result is that each piece of fused dichroic glass jewelry is unique.
